If you have any experience as an athlete or gym-goer, you may be aware that the hip flexors play a key role in performance and injury prevention. They also happen to be a hugely neglected area of the body as many people tend to focus on the glutes, quads, and other muscles they can easily see in the mirror. While this trend is starting to die down as health and wellness education improves, we still have a long way to go.

More people are beginning to pick up exercises for the hip flexors, but there are still major gaps in how we’re training them. While doing movements like leg lifts and banded marches are a great start, these are all positions that shorten the hip flexor fibers in a strong, safe position. If you want to truly bulletproof this area, we must also look to strengthen the hip flexors in an eccentric, or lengthened position. Below you’ll find three fantastic exercises to do just that.
