A while back, I wrote a piece on how variety in fitness can be overrated. We can get so caught up in adding progressions or modifications to movements to make them look more impressive while missing out on the point of why we’re even doing them in the first place. While slightly controversial, there are times when we simply need to put our heads down and get to work. Certain staple exercises don’t need to be modified, you just need to do them consistently.
I was reminded of this again over the past couple of weeks as I’ve been brushing up on my calf exercises. Struggling with a bit of Achilles soreness post-10k race, I’ve had to get more disciplined about moving this area of my body. This has led me to do some research on what elite runners are doing to prevent Achilles complications, and the results were shockingly simple. After examining athletes such as Clayton Young, Jared Ward, and even Eliud Kipchoge, it’s clear that there are a few staple movements that virtually all high-end athletes are focusing on.
