Bone mineral density is an incredibly important health metric that very few people are talking about...until it’s too late. It can predict the onset of osteoporosis and consequential bone fractures in areas like the hip and vertebrae. Unfortunately, few people take it seriously until problems strike. In the U.S. alone, low bone mass impairs over 43 million people, costing the medical system far too much money than it should.

There are many ways to keep our bones healthy including prioritizing a balanced diet, committing to vitamin D intake, maintaining a healthy body weight, and avoiding substance abuse. HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is also an option for those wanting to address estrogen deficiency.

Although awareness of proper nutrition and hormonal implications is increasing, I fear we’re abandoning one of the most accessible solutions to this problem: resistance exercise.

Strength training is an effective tool for preventing the onset of osteoporosis, but fewer realize it’s also a great treatment strategy for those already diagnosed with osteoporosis. No matter what season of life you’re in, exercise has the potential to improve your bone health and extend your health span.
