There are plenty of types of scoliosis. You can have curves in each spine segment, including a combination of all three. There are s or c curves, each presenting unique challenges for patients. While there is a lot of confusion and fear around these spinal imbalances, you have more control than you think.

Working as a kinesiologist in a chiropractic clinic for several years, one of the most valuable lessons I learned is that there is no one-size-fits-all rehab plan for this complication. There will always be an element of trial and error. Additionally, this is a structural issue so there is no magic way to straighten your curve unless you want to take the surgery route.

While this may all sound discouraging, there is hope. The beauty of back pain is that structural deviations aren’t always synonymous with poor symptoms. Oftentimes you can become functional and pain-free (or at least in less pain) by doing exercises that recruit neglected tissues, even if they can’t ‘fix’ your spine completely. These movements can also serve as a protective tool to ensure your curvature or pain outcomes don’t get worse over time.
