Piriformis syndrome is one of the most misdiagnosed conditions for sports-related injuries. While pain around the hip and upper leg can be caused by the piriformis muscle pressing on the sciatic nerve, it can be just as commonly due to the lower back referring to the piriformis and sending radiating pain down the leg.

While accurately diagnosing whether your condition is technically piriformis pain, a deep gluteal syndrome, sciatic nerve irritation, lower back pain, or other, can be challenging, I want to provide some tried and true exercises that have helped many of my clients find relief in this area. These movements all have to do with mobilizing your lower back to rule out the possibility that it’s referring pain down the leg and disguising it as piriformis syndrome.

If you play your cards right, these movements will do much more for you than ameliorate your glute pain or locate the source of the problem. They can drastically improve hip stability along with lower back strength and resilience so that you can be in the best shape possible for all of your physical activity endeavors. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in discovering for yourself, read on!
