If you’ve ever experienced severe back pain, you know that quick fixes are few and far between. Even the most educated experts don’t have everything figured out when it comes to back rehab and pain management. Therefore, simple ‘prescriptions’ like core strengthening are not always helpful or appropriate.

While this may be against everything a kinesiologist or trainer should say, just hear me out. Sure, physical activity can be a key part of managing back pain, but it’s not everything. Unfortunately, this narrative that a strong core guarantees back pain relief seems to be commonplace among health and fitness communities. I fear it’s leaving many hardworking patients lost and confused. If you’re struggling with back complications, take heart and know that it’s not always a simple process to find relief and reclaim function.

Today I want to cover a few reasons why core training isn’t the magic potion for building a healthy back. My hope is that this would open up your perspective to just how holistic pain management can be, and how personal it is to each individual. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all formula for everyone, there is a unique path to recovery out there for you.
