The shoulders take a beating in everyday life. Whether you’re hauling heavy grocery bags out of the car or struggling through a laborious job, it’s easy to feel stiff and imbalanced in this region. As a kinesiologist and trainer, the shoulders are near the top of the list for areas that give my clients the most issues. It’s also one of the most understood joints in the human body.

Take one look at the anatomical structure of the shoulder and you’ll realize it’s quite vulnerable. Being surrounded by supporting tendons and ligaments, you must train these tissues to stabilize the shoulder within its socket properly. While this seems like a simple principle, a lot can quickly go awry if you don’t understand how the body works and what you need to prioritize.

The reality is, most people think that healthy shoulders are perfectly symetrical from left to right. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Whichever side is your dominant side usually sits lower and slightly more forward compared to the opposite side because we use that side a lot more with our everyday tasks (carrying, lifting, writing, etc…). This does not need to be fixed, so don’t obsess over it!

No one is perfectly symmetrical…
