Although we can do everything in our power to foster healthy living, it’s impossible to prevent aging entirely. Some aspects of our physiology start to slow down and wear down as the years go by. This is just part of our human condition. Whether it’s stiffer joints or weaker muscles, Father Time has many creative ways of letting us know that we’re getting older.

Although we can’t completely halt this phenomenon, we do have access to a powerful tool for maintaining health and function. This comes in the form of movement. It’s that simple. The humble act of getting out of your chair, doing a light mobility exercise, or going for a brief jog can be the difference between restrictive pain and life-changing freedom.

Movement is medicine. If it came in the form of a pill, we wouldn’t have enough of it to go around.

After years of working with virtually every population type, I’ve begun to pick up what separates fit older adults from those who decide to pack it in early. To put it simply, they don’t underestimate their physical abilities and they lean into movement as the modality for staying young. They put being active at the top of their priority list.
