Whether you’re doing a kickboxing class or going out for a run, the infamous warm-up can make or break your workout. It’s more than about just elevating your heart rate and flailing your appendages around, however. A well-designed routine can drastically enhance your nervous system’s ability to coordinate movements for better performance. Furthermore, it’s one of the most efficient and accessible ways to prevent musculoskeletal injuries while preparing you mentally for the task at hand.

While I’ve seen about every take under the sun for how long the warm-up should be and what needs to be included, I’ll tell you right now that most people are overthinking it. If your exercise selection is on point, you can combine all of the important warm-up principles (elevated heart rate, muscle engagement, joint mobility, coordination, balance, etc…) into a 5-minute package.

That’s right, just 5 minutes.

To help you stop second-guessing your warm-up routine, I’ve designed a lightning-quick program of the 5 best movements to do for overall health. These will activate all of the major joints and tissues in the body to ensure you leave no stone unturned before you start your activity of choice.
