3 Underrated Shoulder Strengthening Exercises That Have Saved Me Pain

I spent many of my teen years participating in ‘extreme sports’ such as skateboarding and mountain biking. While I had a blast tearing up the trails and skateparks, my shoulders eventually paid for it. I had countless FOOSH accidents (falls on the outstretched hand) that led to weakness, instability, and an overall lack of confidence in moving my upper body. This lasted for several years until I began studying kinesiology and taking matters back into my own hands through physical rehab.

During this time, I had some formal physical therapy sessions that allowed me to see what I was doing wrong. While I thought resting my dull, aching shoulders was the answer, I was missing out on the active portion of rehab out of fear of retweaking something or getting another injury. My physio assured me that taking a slow, gradual approach to loading up the shoulder through resistance exercise was necessary to improve pain outcomes and regain the function and mobility I had lost.
