While working as a kinesiologist, one of the most common complaints I hear from clients revolves around back pain. Although this issue immobilizes millions of people, solutions aren’t necessarily complicated. It’s the basic rehab and prehab exercises that magically turn pain into function. People are often shocked at how life-changing the simple act of moving your body can have on your muscles and joints.

I say it over and over again. Movement is medicine.

When you think of back pain exercises, the cat-cow is probably near the top of your list. Whether you’re a regular at the gym or not, you’ve probably tried or at least heard of this movement. It’s famous in virtually every corner of fitness for its ability to quickly mobilize the spine and lower discomfort.

What folks often don’t realize, however, is that there isn’t just one way to perform this exercise. While there is nothing inherently wrong with the regular ol’ cat-cow, I’d encourage you to not stop there. You’ve been missing out on a few modifications that have the potential to transform your back health for good!
